What is Whiplash injury after a car accident?

Whiplash is a term that defines injury to the neck that mostly occurs as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Whiplash refers to a sequence of neck injuries caused by a sudden distortion of the neck such as hyper-extension (over-extension) or hyper-flexion (over-flexion) injury to the neck. In numerous cases the whiplash injury is the result of being struck from behind.
“Rear-End” is the most common type of car accident, which most typically the occupants in the vehicle get the greatest risk of injury including whiplash.

Basic Whiplash Symptoms:

  • Neck Pain
  • Headache
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Blurred Vision
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue or Weakness
  • Irritability
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo (sense of rotation)

In order your chiropractor can properly diagnose your whiplash injury, it’s important for you to remember all the details regarding your accident. The following facts should be cleared and discussed with the examiner doctors during the initial evaluation after the car accident:

  • Were you wearing your seat belt?
  • Was the car moving or stopped?
  • What type of impact was it, rear or frontal?
  • Did the pain occur instantly?

In some cases, it could be challenging for chiropractors or other medical professional to treat whiplash injuries because of the variables they must consider.
Most chiropractors classify their diagnosis to four stages:

  1. Grade I whiplash: If you complain of some neck pain and stiffness, your injury will fall into grade one whiplash.
  2. Grade II whiplash: If you have lost range of motion in the neck and can’t flex, bend, extend or rotate, your injury will fall into grade two.
  3. Grade III whiplash: If you have severe pain in your neck that involves any neurological symptoms such as numbness, weakness, tingling, or hot and cold sensations, your injury will fall into Grade three.
  4. Grade IV whiplash: This stage of whiplash would involve any sort of fracture in the spine that could cause severe damage to the spinal cord.

When your chiropractor diagnosed and classified the grade of your whiplash, he or she will get you started on a proper treatment protocol.

Initially, your chiropractor will probably recommend that you apply ice to your neck as a home care.
The benefit of ice to the affected area:

  • Prevent further swelling.
  • Reduce pain.
  • Constricting blood vessels.
  • Numbing pain receptors.
  • It may also be essential for your chiropractor to perform spinal adjustment (spinal manipulative therapy) to the affected areas of the spine.
  • The benefit of spinal adjustment:
  • Return joints that are out of place to their optimal position.
  • Increase the joint’s range of motion,
  • Relax tight muscles.
  • Increase blood flow and decrease inflammation.

In the initial stages of whiplash injury, your chiropractor also treats you with physiotherapeutic modalities such, ultrasound therapy, interferential current (IFC) and cold laser therapy.

It is highly recommended to avoid any vigorous activities such as football, basketball, soccer, hockey and many more sports after a whiplash injury till you reached the full recovery from the injury .But that recommendation doesn’t mean you should be inactive during the recovery time. As soon as your pain decreases, your chiropractor will probably recommend that you perform a number of activities to help restore motion in your neck and strengthen muscles to provide support and stability. The following activities will be explained to the patient for their rehabilitation stage.

Stretching, strengthening, proprioceptive, postural and aerobic exercises.

By preforming regular adjustments and therapy to our patients, with proper exercise program, we can overcome the symptoms of whiplash and avoid chronic symptoms that might otherwise remain for years.
