1. What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the science of correcting the vertebral subluxations through gentle and specific chiropractic adjustments, which allow your body to be at its optimum level.

2. What is a subluxation?

Subluxation is described as a misalignment of one or more of your spinal bones causing interference to your nervous system. If your nervous system interferes with your body’s natural ability to heal itself, then its functioning has become impaired because it is not at its optimum level.

For instance, if the wheels of your car are not balanced you would see the wear and tear on your tires; the same fact holds true for the human body if the spine is misaligned.

3. What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a gentle, specific “thrust” delivered by hand or instrument. The purpose of the adjustment is to correct your spinal subluxation(s), thus removing the nerve interference in your body. The belief is that there can be some misalignment, called a subluxation, in the joint, and a sudden movement or manipulation can lessen the tension on the ligament, muscle or joint.

Some of the effects of an adjustment include increase in activity, decrease in illness, and improvement in overall quality of life.

4. Does it hurt to get adjusted?

An adjustment is not at all painful, as long you are as relaxed as possible and you do not resist during the adjustment. I am confident that once you start getting your regular adjustments, you will begin to look forward to them. When you allow the vertebrae in your spine to return to their proper position, you will notice a decrease in stress and tension. Try it and notice how your body feels after the adjustment.

5. Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic care is one of the safest types of healthcare in the world. You only need to compare the malpractice paid by chiropractors to those paid by medical doctors.

This year, 250,000 people will die as a result of bad medicine, making this the third leading cause of death in the United States of America (The Journal of The American Medical Association, JAMA; Vol.284, July 26, 2000). Of the millions of people receiving chiropractic adjustments, each year, only a handful will ever have the need to make a complaint.

6. What causes the sound made during a chiropractic adjustment?

The sound heard during the spinal adjustment is caused by the release of nitrogen gas rushing in to fill the partial vacuum created when the joints that are slightly separated. However, some other adjusting techniques use little force without producing any noise.

7. Is it bad to “crack” your back or neck a lot?

This is one of the most common questions asked. If a person has a habit of “cracking or popping” his/her neck or back, it is normally because one area of their spine is fixated (restricted of motion) or jammed. This can be due to a variety of reasons which are causing another area to move too much and “pop” and can often happen by itself. The fact about getting the proper adjustment is to work on the fixated or jammed area that needs to be properly adjusted by a chiropractor so that the other parts of the spine won’t be hypermobile and noisy. When you “crack” your back, you may be relieving the tension for a little while, but do you notice how fast it comes back? The reason is “You are not giving yourself a specific and proper way of adjustment and you have not been correcting ANYTHING.” People who are having this kind of habits to self- adjust themselves, should go to a Doctor of Chiropractic to have their spine checked and receiving a proper and specific adjustments. This way, you will prevent your spine of getting further damages rather than to fix yourself. Even a chiropractor cannot adjust him/herself.

8. Once you see a chiropractor, do you have to continue treatment for the rest of your life?

No. The extent to which you choose to benefit from your chiropractic care is up to you. You are solely responsible for the quality of your health and well-being. However, we strongly urge all patients to consider lifetime, wellness chiropractic care. This is where the long-term, lasting benefits of care are enjoyed. In the same manner in which regular exercise and healthy eating habits are a lifestyle decision, so is chiropractic care. The goal is to remain subluxation free for life.

9. Should I only go to a chiropractors if I’m in PAIN?

No. Pain is often the FINAL notice that the body is experiencing dysfunctions. Just because your symptoms disappear does not mean that you won’t need any further wellness/maintenance care. Many of the patients seen in our office have spinal degeneration, which has taken years to develop. The trauma of the birth processes, slips and falls injuries, auto accidents, sport injuries and other stress factors that you experienced in your lifetime could adversely affect the health of your spine if left untreated. The longer you wait to have your spine checked by your doctor of chiropractic, the longer time it will take to correct your problems (subluxations). It is ultimately up to you how you choose to use your chiropractic care. It has been our experience that those who stop care when they are “feeling fine” will return with the same kind of issues, which brought them to our office in the first visit. On the other hand, those patients who commit to a long-term chiropractic care will find their health challenge(s) rarely return and they enjoy a higher quality of life & health.
